Cyriax Diploma Course structure

Module A : Orthopaedic highlights Extremities, 2.5 days

Module B : Orthopaedic highlights Spine, 2.5 days

Module C : Cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, advanced course, 2.5 days

Module D : Extremities advanced 1, 2.5 days

Module E : Extremities advanced 2,  2.5 days

Module F : exam preparation course + theoretical and practical diploma exam, 2-3 days

Global remark : for what is concerned the execution of treatment and examination techniques we always follow the "3 step plan" :

  • first explain the procedures through the powerpoint presentation
  • then demonstration on film
  • followed by life demonstration on a colleague

Then sufficient time is provided for practical exercise. We promote regular exercise and partner change. Practice makes perfect !

Course days start at 09h00 and generally finish around 17h00 (modifications in schedule and timeset could slightly differ in relation to the size of the course groups or on specific demand)

 

Modul A : compact course "Orthopaedic highlights Extremities"

Day 1

  • Basic principles of modern orthopaedic medicine Cyriax
  • Rules of referred pain
  • How to reach a valid diagnosis : inspection, history, relevant functional examination, palpation
  • Clinical reasoning by using a standardized Cyriax assessment form
  • General treatment strategy for soft tissue lesions
  • Elbow : inspection, history and basic functional examination
  • Elbow : diagnosis and treatment procedures of tennis and golfer elbow

 Day 2

  • Elbow : diagnosis and treatment procedures of tennis (5 types) and golfer elbow (2 types) (continuation)
  • Shoulder : inspection, history and basic functional examination
  • Shoulder : diagnosis and treatment procedures of tendinitis, -osis (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis, biceps,...)
  • Foot : inspection, history and basic functional examination
  • Foot : diagnosis and treatment procedures of inversion and eversion traumata (sprained ankles : lig. talofibulare ant-post, lig. calcaneofibulare, lig. calcaneocuboideum, peronei, tibialis posterior)

 Day 3

  • Knee : inspection, history and basic functional examination
  • Knee : diagnosis and treatment procedures of ligamentous lesions (MCL, LCL, coronary ligaments)
  • Wrist : inspection, history and basic functional examination
  • Wrist : diagnosis and treatment procedure of a carpal subluxation (dorsal-palmar ; ligamentous lesion)

 

 Module B : compact course "Orthopaedic Highlights Spine"

Day 1

  • Specific history taking
  • General history
  • Inspection : what is relevant ?
  • Basic functional examination : how to reach, in a valid and practical way, a diagnosis and differential diagnosis, respecting red flags
  • Accessory examination
  • (ir)relevance of palpation and other diagnostic procedures

Day 2

  • Specific indications and contraindications of manipulative techniques ; techniques with and without traction component
  • Specific indications and contraindications of mechanical traction techniques
  • Specific indication and contraindications of self treatment exercises
  • Creating a treatment strategy with incorporation of prophylactic and self treatment Mechanisms of spontaneous cure procedures

 Day 3

  • Accessory SI pain provocation examination
  • Clinical reasoning by using a standardized examination protocol incorporating links to McKenzie and other manual therapy approaches : how to reach a diagnosis and differential diagnosis ; is there any compatibility between different methods ?
  • Non-mechanical disorders : discover the yellow and red flags
  • Differential diagnosis with SI-joint and hip problems
  • Indications for epidural local anaesthesia and nerve block

 

Module C: Cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, advanced course

  • Lumbar : detailed analysis assessment form
  • Lumbar : recapitulation examination and treatment techniques
  • Cervical : history, inspection, functional examination

  • Extremties and Spine : general recapitulation treatment and examination techniques - specific theoretical and practical problem as a preparation for the theoretical and practical exam.

 

Module F : theoretical and practical deiploma exam

Theoretical examination : answer 60 MCQ questions in a maximum time frame of 2 ½ h.

Correction of the exam and group analysis of this exam, in order to give you optimal feedback.

The practical examination is done in couples, about max. 45' per person : you should show a series of examination and treatment techniques ; you choose the procedures yourself, blind, at random.

Diploma ceremony

Your name and contact data will be published, on a voluntary base, on the Cyriax Certified Therapist list on line.

 

NOTE : course stuctures can be adapted according to specific wishes of organizing partners ; in some countries (Slovenia, Croatia and Italy) we still offer a system of 4 sessions of 5 days each, followed by an exam course.  This formula doesn't offer any flexibility ; participants are obliged to register for the full 20 days.  

The structure of course modules may vary, but every ETGOM course has the same intrinsic content and quality.
